Improvement across the board in Key Stage 2 results
Primary schools in Hammersmith made a steady improvement yet again this year, according to published figures for the Key Stage 2 exams and assessments. They saw high percentages for expected achievement and progress, in both cases significantly above the national average for schools in 2013. Schools in W6 also posted some remarkable individual results.
For the third year running, the proportion of children achieving level 4 or above in KS2 reading, Writing and Maths tests increased in the borough. At an average of 79%, the figure is comfortably higher for local primary schools than for the rest of the country.
Improvement by 2 grades from Key Stage One to Two is considered by the Department of Education to be "expected progress" for pupils in this period. For Hammersmith and Fulham, the proportion of children making such a progression was 93%, 92% and 90% in the Writing, Reading and Maths exams respectively: in each of these subjects, the local area is above the national average.
The year saw a number of individual successes for Hammersmith schools. In the benchmark figure of the proportion of students reaching level 4, Flora Gardens was the most improved primary school in the area, with 91% of students achieving level 4 compared to 62% last year. Addison School made gains of nearly 20%, while Brackenbury, St Paul's CofE and Lena Gardens all made significant improvements. Good Shepherd Roman Catholic School helped all of its KS2 pupils to reach the benchmark level, and honourable mentions go to St Augustine's and St. Stephen's Schools where over 95% of pupils got to level 4 by year 6.
Importantly, several primary schools ensured that all pupils made their 'expected progression' up to KS2 in the Writing Teacher Assessment, and in Reading and Maths exams. All students made such a development in Writing at St Peter's and Avonmore primaries, to name a few. St. Stephen's and Normand primaries, among others, managed to do so in both Reading and Maths.
In the category of level 5 attainment, a number of schools had a good year for 2013. At Sacred Heart, Brackenbury and St. Augustine's, over three-quarters of students achieved level 5 in Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling, and each of these schools also posted impressive figures for Reading and Maths at level 5. For Writing, St. Peter's and Greenside were among a number of schools in which over half of students reached level 5 at KS2; at 70%, John Betts had the highest proportion in the subject.
