Onlookers comforted pensioner as she lay trapped under truck
An elderly woman is recovering in hospital after being hit by a cement truck in Beadon Road, close to Hammersmith Broadway at around 2.30pm on Wednesday, January 14.
The woman, who is reportedly in her seventies, was trapped for some time under the vehicle and was comforted by onlookers as London Ambulance Service and firefighters worked to free her.
She was taken to a west London hospital with a serious head injury but police say it is not thought to be life-threatening.
This is the second accident in a month involving an elderly woman in the local area.
On December 12, 79 year-old Elizabeth Jallum was knocked down by a lorry in North End Road in Fulham, and subsequently died of her injuries.
The accident has led to calls from Reverend Guy Wilkinson, vicar at St Andrew’s Church where she was a parishioner, for the road to be pedestrianised to make it safer.
London Mayor Boris Johnson has also been criticised for "taking a snail's pace approach" to his promised Better Junctions programme. Under the programme, which was announced in February last year, the Mayor and Transport for London announced that Hammersmith gyratory was among 33 of London’s biggest and nastiest road junctions set to be made safer and less threatening for cyclists and pedestrians.
