Hearing over Lyric Square Farmers' Market 'Within Weeks'

Council still determined to 'create better market' in Hammersmith town centre

Hammersmith and Fulham Council has refuted claims by City and Country Farmers' Markets that it has obtained a court order allowing it to run Lyric Square Farmers' Market every Thursday until October 1.

Instead, the council says that both itself and City and Country Farmers' Markets, or CCFM, have made representations to the court about the future of the weekly market and are now awaiting a hearing -a wait expected to take just a few weeks.

During this period a council spokesman says both have agreed to keep the status quo, with CCFM continuing to run it.

However, the council is making it clear it still intends to take over the popular market from CCFM, which has run it for over ten years.

Cllr Ben Coleman, H&F Cabinet Member for Commercial Revenue and Resident Satisfaction, says: "We are determined to create a better market, with more stalls for shoppers and lower rental costs for traders."

The dispute began in March when H&F Council announced it was not renewing its contract with CCFM, and would be taking it over from the beginning of April, alongside the Friday market which it already runs.

In response, CCFM announced it would be fighting the decision and launched an online petition which is says has already gathered over 1,000 signatures from local people, both on paper and online.

CCFM runs markets across London, including a new one taking place at Wendell Park Primary School in Cobbold Road, W12 every Sunday from 10am till 3pm.
