Building could turn Lyric Square into 'Blob Square'
A plan to develop the NCP carpark in Hammersmith Grove into a giant office, cinema and restaurant complex has met with opposition from Brackenbury residents.
Property developer Development Securities Plc in conjunction with London Underground Ltd, has put in a planning application (ref 2007/02005) for the site, close to the Hammersmith and City Line tube station on the corner of Hammersmith Grove and Beadon Road.
The development would include two cinemas, six restaurants, shops and 39,000 sq m of office space, in a building of up to 11 storeys.
Residents say the development would dwarf not just the surrounding residential areas but also the newly-revamped Lyric Square and would cut across Beadon Road, increasing traffic congestion.
Richard Winterton, of Brackenbury Residents Association (BRA), said: “The development is too large: the single unrelieved mass of building is out of scale with the site surroundings, and would create an overbearing presence which would dominate and spoil the views in the area.
"The area of office and commercial space within the building would generate levels of vehicular and pedestrian activities which would disrupt and intrude on the residential areas alongside.
"The building will dwarf the Lyric Theatre – we will have not Lyric Square, more Blob Square.”
BRA have urged other Hammersmith residents to voice their opinions of the proposed plans for the area before the cut off date for objections – October 14.
