Local Assembly Member Angie Bray has called for an urgent review of the decision by Transport for London to build a £200,000 level crossing on the A4 near Hammersmith Town Hall. This project is part of Ken Livingstone's plan to replace all underpasses with level crossing, and is proceeding despite the fact that a pedestrian was run over and killed last year on a similar crossing on the A40.
Hammersmith and Fulham Labour Council had requested the new crossing because of safety fears surrounding using the existing underpass at night. However local Conservatives have argued that the money would be better spent refurbishing the underpass.
Angie Bray said: “This project has no redeeming features: its expensive, will block traffic and could be very dangerous for those using it. Surely for £200,000 we could have put CCTV on the underpass or even built a bridge over the A4. The A4 is a major route and this proposal is almost as bad as putting a crossing on a Motorway. Unfortunately this is another example of TFL not taking into account the circumstances of the local area.”
