Can You Identify This 1970s Hammersmith Location?

Site used by The Sweeney sparks major debate on our forum

They are the photos from the 1970s which have sparked a major debate on the HammersmithToday forum, after a certain Gene Hunt posted them asking for help identifying the location.

His request has set people quizzing other locals, scouring maps and even touring the streets of Hammersmith to try and figure it out.

Location in Hammersmith in the 1970s

The location was apparently used in an episode of The Sweeney, much of which was shot close to its production base in Hammersmith's Colet Court. Theories on the exact spot range from Glenthorne Road to Fulham's Seagrave Road, with general agreement that the high building, since demolished may hold the key.

The most comprehensive response meanwhile came from Tristram Minns who says: " I grew up around Shepherd's Bush Green in the 70s, in Woodstock Grove, it almost looked like what we used to call the bulldogs at the end of the road, where the BBC building was located and there were extensive building works, I think knocking down the old BBC building, or maybe just incorporating K West.

" I then began to wonder if this red brick building was Hammersmith & West London College and the other building the old Novotel building before it was rebuilt, located in Shortlands or even around Olympia, Sinclair Road backing onto the railway. These buildings look so familiar to me, but my instinct says it is around Colet Gardens and the Shortlands, looks like the old Novotel building, but the whole area has undergone a massive regeneration over the years, so after several hours researching I think I'm beat.

" I considered the other side of Shepherd's Bush roundabout where they built Westfield, St Anns Villas/Freston Rd (North Kensington), Woodstock Grove, where the old BBC building was (either end, photo 1 looked like slope end going up to Shepherd's Nush Green, advertising on side of house)Sinclair Rd, railway side, Russell Rd, where they rebuilt new homes, or Shortlands/Colet Gardens, which I believe to be the location, before building Colet Court? Anyway, interesting thread, thanks for sharing, will be interested if I jogged anyone's memory!"
