A driver on the 391 bus route has won the Hello London Award at this year’s London Bus Awards. He has been recognised for ‘good old-fashioned manners’ and his sense of humour.

Ian Holmes, who has worked for RATP Dev London for over eight years and is based at Fulwell garage, was one of nine recipients of an award at the annual event. Customers on his route 391 bus are pleasantly surprised as he says ‘good afternoon’ to each person who boards the bus, often in a variety of languages.

A spokesperson for TfL said of Ian, “He is very popular amongst passengers and uses the PA system to good effect, taking care to point out local landmarks, shops and pubs and even offering Tube service updates. With good old-fashioned manners, a sense of humour an excellent knowledge of south and south west London, Ian is a real ambassador for our city.”

The Awards celebrate the excellence and outstanding work of London bus drivers, garage and support staff, who work hard every day behind the scenes to keep London moving and provide a vital service to millions of passengers every day.

Nine awards were presented, including to staff at Waterloo Garage who oversaw its switch to full electric operation and to a driver who bravely defended a disabled passenger from five attackers.

Leon Daniels, TfL's Managing Director of Surface Transport, who hosted the event said: “The London Bus Awards rightly recognise the fantastic achievements our most inspiring and dedicated staff. I’d like to thank the winners who have all demonstrated incredible customer service and commitment to our passengers. I would also extend my thanks to all bus drivers and support staff who do such an amazing job day-in, day-out to ensure bus services continue to operate across the Capital.”
