'Royal Mail Should Be Part-Privatised'

According to Government Minister who welcomed approach by TNT

Royal Mail should be part-privatised according to Business minister Peter Mandelson who welcomed an approach by TNT to take a minority stake in the company.

The announcement followed the publication of an independent review which stated that the operations arm of the Royal Mail needed to be partly privatised in order for it to remain commercially viable. However, the proposed sale would not affect Post Office retail outlets.

The partnership would only work if TNT, Europe's second-largest mail and express delivery company, was able to revamp the Royal Mail according to industry analysts.

The Communication Workers Union, which represents most of Royal Mail's workers, said that private capital was not the solution to Royal Mail's problems, though it welcomed proposals for the taxpayer to reduce Royal Mail's pension fund deficit.
