Green Flag Status Awarded to 15 Local Parks

Including St Paul's Gardens and Wendell Park recognised for first time

Green Flag status has been awarded to a total of 15 parks across the borough, including two being recognised for the first time.

The newcomers in 2019 are St Paul’s Gardens in Hammersmith Road and Wendell Park in Shepherd's Bush.

It is particularly appropriate for St Paul's Gardens to be recognised this year, the 75th anniversary of D-Day, as it was on this site, at the time housing St Paul's Girls' School, where General Montgomery planned the Normandy Landings.

A celebration marking the anniversary was held in the gardens in June. You can read more about this here.

Wendell Park, at the western end of Shepherd's Bush near Askew Road has benefited over the last two years from the dedicated care of the Gardening Friends.

This new community group have transformed a significant part of the park from a slightly unloved and neglected condition into beautiful, herbaceous borders supporting a broad diversity of flora and insect life.

Their efforts have been recognised by H &F Council who presented the group with a Civic Honour for their contribution to the environment in the borough.

Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag scheme - now in its 23rd year - uses strict criteria to identify parks with the highest standards of cleanliness, horticulture and facilities.

It recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the UK and around the world.

Expert judges visit all the applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement.

The 15 sites awarded Green Flag status in H&F are:

  • Bishop’s Park and Fulham Palace, SW6
  • Brook Green, W6
  • Frank Banfield Park, W6

A Green Flag flying overhead in H&F’s parks is a sign to the residents that the park boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

" We’re immensely proud to have so many world-class green spaces," said Cllr Wesley Harcourt, H&F Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and Residents' Services. "This means most of our residents and businesses are just a short distance from a high-quality green space and can reap the proven health benefits they bring.

"The Green Flag awards reflect the hard work of our parks staff and the many residents and Friends groups who work with us to help make sure our parks are clean, pleasant and welcoming to all who visit."
