Anglesea Arms Chef Phil Wins Great Sausage Roll Off 2016

Pheasant and black pudding roll wins over panel of judges

Phil Harrison, head chef at the Anglesea Arms pub in Hammersmith's Wingate Road has won the Great Sausage Roll Off 2016.

The annual Roll Off, hosted by the Red Lion in Barnes, saw 20 chefs take part in the annual competition which looks for those who can add care, quality, expertise and that little extra 'je ne sais quois' to the humble, but most British, of bar snacks.

The panel of judges, including Thane Prince, Bonhams Restaurant head chef Tom Kemble, and Masterchef 2015 finalist Emma Spitzer chose Phil's pheasant and black pudding roll with turnip dip as the winner, beating competition from chefs including local rival Jonathan Pellew from the Blue Boat on Hammersmith's riverside.

Phil said: " I am absolutely thrilled to have won the Great Sausage Roll Off. I was up against some tough competition and it was a privilege to cook alongside the other worthy contestants."

Angus KcKean, co-manager of the Red Lion said: " This year has definitely seen the Great Sausage Roll Off reach new heights and its success is a testament to the calibre of chefs we have participating in the competition."

Following the competition, the competing sausage rolls were auctioned to the audience, in the process raising over £400 for Shooting Star Chase, a charity caring for families with children or young people with life limiting conditions.

Phil's sausage roll went on to achieve TV fame when it was featured on Channel 4's Sunday Brunch, with guest Guy Garvey, lead singer with Elbow declaring it "the best sausage roll ever".

Phil, seen here with his rolls, won a set of I.O.Shen knives and is now preparing to take on the challenge again, tweeting in response to congratulation from a colleague : " Cheers baby, next year is just around the corner."
