Next Greenside Lecture is on Thursday May 9

Hear an illustrated talk on two gifted local artists

The next Greenside Arts Lecture, on Thursday May 9 at Greenside Primary School in Shepherd's Bush will be an illustrated talk by author José Manser on her book Mary Fedden and Julian Trevelyan, Life and Art on the River Thames.

As part of a series of illustrated talks highlighting the artistic heritage of Hammersmith and raising funds for the preservation of the Grade II* listed Greenside Mural, José Manser will tell the story of Mary Fedden and Julian Trevelyan, two remarkable and gifted artists with radically different backgrounds, visions and approaches.

She will talk about how they met, fell in love, married and lived together at Durham Wharf in Hammersmith on the River Thames; gathered friends about them; and travelled widely throughout the world seeking inspiration for their painting and printmaking.

After the talk, José will be signing copies of her book.

Arrive from 7pm at Greenside Primary School in Westville Road, W12 to view the Greenside Mural, hear more about the campaign to preserve it and have a drink with friends.

Tickets to the lecture cost £6.50 and can be reserved in advance here.

Greenside Primary School in London, W12, designed by Erno Goldfinger, was opened on February 28 1952.  Controversial architect Goldfinger created a structural system for schools, designed using an ingenious reinforced concrete frame for the London County Council, to help rebuild and educate a new modern post-war Britain. Greenside is one of the only two built, the other being Brandlehow in Putney.

As part of Goldfinger’s vision he commissioned Gordon Cullen to paint a mural in the entrance hall, earning Greenside the star on its Grade II* listing. Languishing unloved behind a red curtain for the last 20 years because it went ‘out of fashion’, the mural is now being brought back into school life by a dedicated team made up of parents, staff and members of the local community and known as The Friends of the Greenside Mural.  They have kicked off a campaign to raise funds to renovate the mural that is showing signs of its 60 years' wear and tear.
