Union flag over Town Hall flies at half mast in his memory

Hammersmith and Fulham Council has announced that the Union Flag is flying at half-mast over Hammersmith Town Hall today in memory of Nelson Mandela who passed away yesterday, December 5.

Hammersmith MP Andy Slaughter also paid tribute to the South African leader tweeting @hammersmithandy: " A life that has changed all our lives and made us a more compassionate and equal society. Our greatest citizen."

Born in 1918, Mr Mandela was South Africa's first black president and anti-apartheid icon. Mr Mandela led South Africa's transition from white-minority rule in the 1990s after 27 years in prison. He was also a Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

Aged 95, Mr Mandela had been receiving intensive medical care for a lung infection after spending three months in hospital and died peacefully at his home yesterday, with his family around him.
