A major new live music is set to open at Olympia London in West Kensington. It will be situated above the centre’s west exhibition hall as part of a £1.3billion redevelopment project. The target date of opening is Christmas 2024.

When completed it will become the largest live music venue in west London with an audience capacity of 4.440 seats. Currently the biggest venue is the 3,341-seat Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith.

The music venue will be developed in partnership with AEG Presents, which represents acts such as Ed Sheeran, The Rolling Stones and Elton John.

AEG Chief executive Steve Homer said, “This is very exciting. Olympia is steeped in music history, as far back as Jimi Hendrix in the 60s.”

As well as Hendrix, big names who have appeared there include Pink Floyd, Rod Stewart, Status Quo, Primal Scream and The Cure.

The chairman of Yoo Capital, which owns Olympia London, John Hitchcox said, “It’s been a challenging year for the events, live entertainment, retail and hospitality sectors, but this is a clear indication of confidence in this iconic landmark as a destination for culture and creativity.”

There are going to be 340 hotel rooms at the site run by New Hyatt Regency and citizenM hotels. The re-development will also include a four-screen cinema, 1,500-seat theatre, 40 restaurants and cafes, shops, offices and 2.5 acres of gardens and public space.

Olympia London opened in 1886 and claims to be the capital’s busiest venue with 200 events attracting 1.6 million visitors a year.

Hammersmith & Fulham Council Leader, Cllr Stephen Cowan, welcomed the creation of the new Olympia entertainment hub saying, “Olympia London is a crucial part of our mission to make Hammersmith & Fulham a global hotspot in STEM (Science, technology, engineering and maths) industries, fashion and culture,” he said.

“It’s already bringing some of the best careers and start-up opportunities to our residents’ doorsteps – something that will continue for generations.”
