Young Runners Bring Home Medals from Cross Country Competition

Oustanding performances from borough's Under 15 and Under 13 teams

35 of Hammersmith and Fulham's fastest young long distance runners took part in the London Youth Games cross country competition at Parliament Hill on Saturday November 15.

Outstanding performances from Verity Walker, Kosana Weir, and Alice Harray earned the H&F Girls’ Under 15 team silver medals.

The best individual performance meanwhile came from Lucillo Burrello who finished in second place in the U15 boys’ competition.

The runners were taking on top young athletes from 31 other London boroughs, in a hard race in very soggy conditions.

The challenging event has become a breeding ground for talented distance athletes, and was a stepping stone for 2012 Olympic hero Mo Farah in years gone by
.
The Girls’ Under 13 team of Taylor Williams, Jordan Williams and Grace Bowden-Stone were placed fourth, a great achievement considering that Taylor was more than two years younger than some of the other runners.

" This was a fabulous achievement by some of the borough’s most talented young athletes and they should feel very proud of their performances," says the council’s Cabinet Member for children and education, Cllr Sue Macmillan. " I would like to thank all of the runners, parents and volunteers from Thames Valley Harriers who gave up their time to support the athletes and the event."

Young runners interested in putting themselves forward for selection for the Hammersmith and Fulham team for the London Mini Marathon should email sportsdevelopment@lbhf.gov.uk.
