Hammersmith's Summer Festival Begins This Weekend

With JOY in Lyric Square performed by the Unity Choir

Hammersmith's annual Summer Festival gets underway this weekend with JOY in Lyric Square.

On Saturday 8 June at 12pm and 3pm, disabled and non-disabled Hammersmith & Fulham residents will come together to perform as the Unity Choir.

In two free out-door performances, they will be singing songs composed by local disabled artists with talented musician Ara Serugo-Lugo – a joyful celebration of the creative strength that exists within our community.

JOY 2019 is a celebration of local disabled artists and part of this year’s Summer Festival and Hammersmith & Fulham Arts Festival, running throughout this week.

You can see the full daily programme for the ArtsFest, runnjing to 9 June here

This week, there are also four evenings of performance and workshops at the Lyric Hammersmith, showcasing already established artists and reaching out across the community to emerging disabled artists and those who have not previously been involved in the arts.

These are The JOY of Performing, tonight 5 June; The JOY of Theatre, 6 June; The JOY of Music, 7 June and The JOY of Dance, 8 June. Find out more here.

The Summer Festival continues through June and July, with the Big Screen returning to Lyric Square for free films, opera and sports, including live tennis from Wimbledon, plus picnics in the square, book swaps and more.

In the next week, which is also Bike Week, local cyclists can consult Dr Bike on 11 June from 11am till 3pm, to get their cycles road ready and protected with free maintenance and security advice.

Police officers, funded by Hammersmith BID will be providing free security bike marking. Your bike will get its own permanent barcode that will be uploaded with your personal details onto the BikeRegister police national database.

It is followed by a Hammersmith Highline Exhibition, from 22-30 June, with entries from the public ideas competition to generate proposals for a Hammersmith Highline on a disused railway viaduct will be on display at Kings Mall.

Organised by Hammersmith BID and local architect group West London Link, the competition aims to forge ideas that could transform the 300m elevated stretch of viaduct into an attraction similar to New York City’s High Line.

Thers will also be Picnics in the Square on 24-26 June and 15-17 July, from 12pm-3pm.

Relax, ping-pong or picnic al-fresco during lunchtimes. Soak up the atmosphere with our free Hammersmith BID deckchairs and picnic tables.
