Council Leader Stephen Cowan Thanks Voters for Support

After Labour councillors elected in every ward in Hammersmith and Shepherd's Bush

H&F Council Leader, Cllr Stephen Cowan has thanked local voters for their support in a statement highlighting some of the key issues in the Local Council Election on 3 May.

In the election, Hammersmith & Fulham's residents gave the Labour administration a major vote of confidence, with 35 out of a total of 46 seats across 12 of the borough's 16 wards, including every ward in Hammersmith and Shepherd's Bush, won by Labour.

The remaining 11 were won by the Conservatives in four wards in Fulham - Fulham Town, Parsons Green and Walham, Palace Riverside and Munster.

This represented a big increase in Labour's majority compared with the previous local election in 2014 when the result was 26 Labour councillors and 20 Tories.

Cllr Cowan said in a tweet @StephenCowan:"Thank you to all who put their trust in us. We will always strive to make you proud. This vote was an endorsement of @HFLabour's approach and of our brand of social democracy - a vote to #SaveCharingCrossHospital, and reject the #ConservativesBrexitMadness with a #PeoplesVote."

The council has been running a long term campaign to protect the future of Charing Cross Hospital, which has frequently led to a war of words with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, and this was once again strongly highlighted in the run-up to the election.

The council also became the first in the country earlier this year to call on the government to abandon any plans for a hard Brexit and to give the British people a People's Vote on whatever deal they end up getting – including the opportunity to stay in the European Union. It also pledged do everything possible to support EU citizens living in H&F.

These messages were bound to receive a warm reception in a borough where 70% voted in the referendum to remain in the EU, and which is home to thousands of EU nationals.

Along with familiar faces, the election saw a number of new councillors - including Bora Kwon, who became Britain's first Korean councillor, elected in Ravenscourt Park.

This week the new Labour group lined up for a photo, with Fulham Broadway Cllr Alan De'Ath tweeting @AlanDeAth1: "Grateful to be part of this wonderful Labour Group family showcasing the diversity of .@LBHF with different socio-economic backgrounds, ages, religions & none, physical abilities, sexualities, ethnicities, & gender mix."

For the Conservatives however, it meant losing a number of well known names, including Joe Carlebach and Caroline Ffiske in Avonmore and Brook Green and the team in Ravenscourt Park, Harry Phibbs, Charlie Dewhirst and Lucy Ivimy.

Former Council Leader, Nick Botterill tweeted @NickHF1: " Today for first time in 22 yrs I am no longer @LBHF councillor. 8 fantastic years running boro with my friend the legendary @team_greenhalgh. Proud to have left a better place behind than we found."

Overall turnout in the election was 39% - up 1% on the previous Local Council Election in May 2014.
