London Corinthian Sailing Club Wins Prize for Increasing Participation

And is now asking local people to help it win title of Club of the Year 2018

London Corinthian Sailing Club

Hammersmith sailing club London Corinthian has won a national award for its success in attracting a wide range of people from the local area to gain experience on the River Thames.

The club, which has a diverse membership of ages, nationalities and professions, drawing members not only from the local Hammersmith and Chiswick area but from right across the capital, beat off other clubs from around the country to win the "increasing participation" category of the 2018 Royal Yachting Association Yachts and Yachting magazine awards.

The club offers dinghy sailing on the Thames and offshore yacht sailing via UK and overseas trips, and a wide range of RYA-accredited training courses.

It runs a Toe in the Water programme to support newcomers and novice sailors, Riverbanking (relaxed social sailing), and fun Wacky Racing for those looking to develop their competitive sailing skills before they join the club’s formal race programme.

In the last year the club has doubled its dinghy launching capacity at its Hammersmith clubhouse, and seen a significant growth in its student and under-26 membership categories. It has created a family section along with a crèche, to enable parents to get afloat, and purchased safety netting for use on yachts to encourage parents to sail with their youngsters.

The London Corinthian Sailing Club is now vying against the winners of the other four categories of the RYA/Yachts and Yachting Club awards (innovation, inclusivity, facility development, and communication) for the overall title of RYA/Yachts and Yachting Club of the Year 2018.

Richard Pettifer, commodore of LCSC, said: “Many people may be surprised that there is a sailing club located in the heart of the capital, and that members are out every weekend of the year sailing on the Thames.

“This is a fantastic achievement for the club which has seen its membership and sailing activities expand enormously over the last few years, and we hope it will encourage more Londoners to try out sailing.

“LCSC is a vibrant, welcoming and social club which strives to offer all levels of sailing to the diverse and varied community that makes up inner London. To win the overall UK award would allow the club to move forward into the future with a strong wind behind us.”

Londoners can support the club by voting here. The public vote closes on 20 February.
