Westfield London Celebrates Five Years in Shepherd's Bush

Centre prepares to party on anniversary of opening on October 30

Westfield London is preparing to celebrate its fifth anniversary.

On October 30 it will be exactly five years since the centre first opened its doors in Shepherd's Bush, and it is celebrating the occasion with five days of special events and offers from October 30 through till November 3.

Westfield says that all in all there will be over 70 events over the happening throughout the centre, with details to be announced soon.

There are also competitions, over 80 discounts, offers and gifts and a range of exclusive products from some of the centre's top retailers. You can find out more about these on Pinterest.

There is also widespread speculation that Westfield will use the occasion to confirm that John Lewis will be opening a flagship store in its new extension.

Earlier this month, Westfield unveiled what it described as reconfigured, detailed proposals for its next phase of a mixed-use retail and residential quarter north of the centre.

In March last year, outline planning permission was granted for a £1 billion mixed-use development adjacent to the existing centre, with up to 1,522 homes, new leisure facilities and new shops, including a new, flagship department store. Since then, it says it has been refining the proposal to deliver "an enhanced experience for consumers, retailers and future residents".

A public exhibition was held to show off the new plans, with feedback now being reviewed and considered before a planning application is submitted to Hammersmith and Fulham Council before the end of the year. If approved, Westfield anticipates beginning works in 2014 with the first phases complete by 2017.

As the centre prepares to party, Westfield says that over the last five year it has:

  • Created over 8,000 new jobs and provided training opportunities for both local people and staff at our retailers.
  • We have also created almost 100 new apprenticeships in 2013 alone
  • Supported local businesses by generating a footfall of 27 million a year through Shepherd’s Bush
  • Regenerated Shepherd’s Bush and White City by transforming predominantly derelict, brownfield land into first class leisure and retail venues
  • Created new connections for pedestrians and cyclists to improve links between Shepherd’s Bush and White City
  • Invested significantly in new public transport facilities by constructing a new railway station at Shepherd’s Bush and a new Underground station at Wood Lane, rebuilding an old Underground station at Shepherd’s Bush, building two new bus stations and helping Barclay’s Cycle Hire extend to West London
  • Delivered new communal space both inside and out, as well as contributed to improvements to Shepherd’s Bush Green
  • Partnered with the local community to help build a new flagship library and assisted the Bush Theatre with their relocation to the old Shepherd’s Bush library
