Policewoman Suffers Head Injuries After Merton Park Attack


Suspects hunted after assaults following routine traffic check

A policewoman suffered head injuries after being assaulted when she was involved in a routine check of a vehicle in Merton Park on Saturday evening (November 17).

A male colleague from the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command also suffered cuts and an emergency services worker was also assaulted in the incident.

Two people are being hunted after the incident in Kingswood Road, off Kingston Road, at 7.55pm on Saturday.

The two PCs had stopped a vehicle for a routine traffic stop, but the three occupants of the vehicle ran off. The officers managed to detain a 20-year-old man [A] before the other two suspects [B and C] returned and the officers were assaulted.

‘A’ was arrested and subsequently charged with assault causing ABH and assault on an emergency services worker. He is further charged with driving without insurance and driving other than in accordance with a licence.

Police motorbikesHe is Martin Payne, aged 20, of Brighton Road, South Croydon. He was due to appear at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court today (November 19).

The two officers were taken to a west London hospital. The female officer sustained head injuries and the male officer suffered cuts. They have both been discharged.

Detectives from the South West Command Unit are investigating, and are hunting for the suspect named 'B' and 'C'. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at Merton via 101 quoting reference CAD 6952/17Nov.
