June marks the 30th anniversary of one of the first open studio schemes in London. In 1973, the artist Mary Fedden and her late husband Julian Trevelyan invited visitors to see their work in the space where it was created. The incentive was a grant of £5 for tea and biscuits!

Since then, more and more artists have joined the scheme, the area has expanded and the reputation grown. Artists at Home, or AAH as it is known, now includes over 40 artists and craftspeople living and working in parts of Hammersmith, Chiswick and Shepherds Bush. There are painters, print-makers, ceramicists, sculptors, textile workers, photographers and papier mache artists. All the work is for sale at studio prices, ranging from a few pounds to several hundred, but visitors are also welcome to just browse.

The group is run by the artists themselves, with support from local industry. This year, the estate agents Fletcher Estates are Principal Sponsors. Derek Fletcher says: "Historically, this area owes a lot to artists and we are happy to be associated with AAH and to help ensure the continuation of this local tradition."

Mary Fedden no longer opens her studio but, to mark AAH's 30th anniversary, has written the foreword to the guide. It also contains a map, a complete list of studios open and an illustration of each artists' work.
