Enquiry Launched into Motorist's Death


Man died after been taken ill when police arrested him

An official investigation has been opened following the death of a man who became ill while being questioned by police.

At 23.08 on 24th February officers from Hammersmith and Fulham borough were on patrol and approached the driver of a car that had stopped in King Street, Hammersmith. The car was facing the wrong way in a one-way street.

Officers spoke to the man and arrested him for failing to provide a breath sample. During this interaction it became clear the man was unwell and an ambulance was called. The man died two days later at Charing Cross Hospital.

The man has been named as Alan Stovold, aged 60, of New Malden.

As with all deaths following police contact the Met's Directorate of Professional Standards is investigating the circumstances of the incident and the Independent Police Complaints Commission have been informed.
