Local group wins inaugural Socrates Cup Debating Challenge

Toastmaster evenings are always fun, friendly, warm and welcoming. That was certainly the case on Monday 3rd of July at the Hop Poles Pub, Hammersmith, when West London Speakers (WLS) and London Athenians took part in a highly enjoyable debate evening.

The debate topic was: Does television stifle the imagination? WLS argued for the motion and Athenians argued against. WLS arguments convincingly carried the motion by 42 to 38 votes and won the ‘Socrates Cup’.

This was the first event staged by WLS and was a huge success. It attracted a wide range of speaking talent and hosted 40 people for the evening.

WLS club was established because the demand for speaking opportunities was pushing the popular Athenians to its capacity. The club meets every 2nd and 4th Monday evenings at 7.00p.m at Hop Poles Pub in Hammersmith.

London Athenians Toastmasters Club, the largest in London, has been established for 11 years and is the only club in London to meet every Tuesday at the Hop Poles.

As a new club WLS offers great opportunities for new speakers to develop speaking and leadership skills.  The success of the evening shows the depth of experience held by WLS as a new club. Every evening is full of energy, humour and is very entertaining.
