Appeal for witness: W14 cyclist killed by car in Cromwell Road

A week after a fail to stop fatal collision that took place at 22:19 hrs on the 11th of March 2005 in Cromwell Rd, SW5, we are still appealing for witnesses.

The vehicle, a dark coloured, 4X4 type vehicle, was seen driving westbound along Cromwell Rd. A witness described it as being driven erratically and swapping lanes prior to the collision taking place.

Between the junctions with Marloes Rd and Earls Court Rd the car collided with a bicycle, causing the cyclist to fall off his bike. The car then failed to stop.

It is believed the vehicle then turned left into Earls Court Rd.

The victim was taken to Charing Cross Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He has now been identified as Thomas Sippel-Dau (10/6/50 - aged 54 years) of St Andrews Road, W14.

Cromwell Rd was closed to traffic, east and westbound, during the period of the initial investigation. It was reopened at approx 03:30 hours.

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed a dark coloured 4X4 style vehicle in collision with the cyclist or who can identify the vehicle or the driver to come forward.

Thomas was a German national, who had lived in this country for some time working at the Imperial College.

PS John Payton of the collision investigation unit at Euston Traffic division said:

"There were a number of other vehicles and pedestrians in Cromwell Road at the time of this incident, I am appealing for those people to come forward as they may help us identify the vehicle involved."

Anyone with any information should contact the collision investigation unit on 0207 259 0324 alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
