Children Escape Blaze in Aspen Gardens

Flat gutted in "very intense fire"

Five young children had a lucky escape from a fierce fire in a flat in Aspen Gardens near King Street on the evening of Friday, October 16.

The seven-storey block was evacuated after the blaze took hold in the family's ground floor flat at around 6.30pm.

Two babies were being bathed by their mother in the seven-room flat when the fire started. It is thought one of the other children, all aged under eight years old, had been playing with lighted paper.

Smoke alarms alerted the family and they all managed to escape before firefighters arrived. Crews from Hammersmith, Chiswick and Kensington were on site for around three hours, checking that the flames had not spread to neighbouring homes.

Watch manager Michael Herschell, of Hammersmith Fire Station, said: "It was a very intense fire. If it had happened in the middle of the night they might not have got out."
