Ocean Images at Apothecary Gallery

Stunning underwater pictures by local photographer Peter

The Apothecary Gallery in Greyhound Road is hosting Ocean Images, an exhibition of black and white underwater photographs taken by acclaimed local photographer, Peter Hince.

Peter, who works as an advertising photographer in Hammersmith has had his photographs published in major dive and photographic magazines. He also specialises in people work, usually on location around the world and earlier in his career spent many years in the music business, mostly working with - and photographing - Freddie Mercury and Queen.

Of his current exhibition, Peter says: "  Holiday snaps of fish did not appeal and having seen wonderful colour work that must have taken years of dedication by underwater specialists to obtain, I hit on the simple idea of fast black and white film using a basic Nikon Nikonos V and available light.

" My 'Nick' was simple to use, could be stowed in a pocket of my buoyancy jacket and I could dive without hinderance and shoot when I wanted. However it took three or four trips before I really got to grips with the technicalities and disciplines of the Nikonos and shooting underwater.

" The final photographs are black and white hand prints that are treated by using different papers, developers and toners and although the images are not as conventional as the brightly saturated colour normally associated with underwater photography, they are true in that they are done with natural light, without flash or strobe. None of the images are retouched or computer manipulated.

" Despite being monotone, they convey the atmosphere and drama that divers experience. I try to capture all the elements of diving and the underwater world - the perspective, drama, beauty, shape, and the feeling of simply being there."

The exhibition is on all this month at Apothecary, 33 Greyhound Road, W6, open Monday- Friday from 10am-6pm and Saturday 10am-2pm. The gallery advises visitors to call in advance to confirm these viewing times, on 020 7381 5727.
