BBC show to select best amateur baker
Fulham Palace will be the venue for the final of the Great British Bake Off. Presented by Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, AKA Mel and Sue, the popular TV show sees passionate home bakers take part in a bake-off to test every aspect of their baking skills as they battle to be crowned the Great British Bake Off's best amateur baker.
The programme has been touring some of the country’s beautiful buildings during the heat phases and has chosen the picturesque Palace as the location for the final bake off showdown.
Cllr Greg Smith, cabinet member for residents' services, said: "Fulham Palace is the jewel in the borough's crown and nowhere can match it for inspiration, beauty and history."
Work will soon commence on restoring the Palace’s grounds The walled garden and vinery will be restored and the stables turned into an education centre. The Fulham Palace moat, thought to be the longest medieval moat England, will be partially excavated at the Gothic Lodge – which will also be repaired.
The council also plans to restore the Tudor wing of the building to establish far greater public access to the Palace. Also on the table are plans to increase dramatically the museum space available in order to create an exciting and interactive learning experience to convey the history of the Palace.
The final of the Great British Bake Off takes place on BBC Two on Tuesday, September 21, at 8pm. The café at the Palace will be celebrating the event by reproducing the winner's recipe for sale in the café for the week after the final programme.
