Hammersmith Flyover To Reopen 28th May

Completion of works ahead of schedule

The vital repair works to enable the full re-opening of the Hammersmith flyover will be completed ahead of schedule and at 06:00 this-morning, Monday 28 May, the flyover will be open to all vehicles, well ahead of the London 2012 Games.

During the works, engineers worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week to complete the work on top and within the flyover, often in a crawl space far less than human height. The teams have sought to reduce the impact of the disruption as far as possible by working day and night, and by keeping one lane open to light traffic the majority of the time

What has been done during these works:
• Over three hundred tonnes of old material has been removed and recycled.

• Around 200m of the central reservation along the flyover has been removed, a new structural slab and concrete barriers have been installed, as well as tailored anchorages to allow for new tensioning cable to be installed in five of the 16 spans where work was most critically needed.

• Last month, around 22km of new cables were installed above and below the bridge deck as part of a besJune 4, 2013 existing cables. These new cables are surrounded by wax oil to prevent dJune 4, 2013ed in the future.

• In order to ensure the complex strengthening was installed correctly the first time in the confined space of the flyover, a 33 tonne trial anchorage was built on the ground for the engineers and operatives to carry out a pilot installation on the ground.

Although the flyover is now structurally restored, TfL will return to the structure during 2013 to strengthen the remaining 11 spans. This work will be carried out, where possible with no weight or lane restrictions and minimal closures to the flyover, which will be coordinated by TfL to ensure minimal traffic disruption.
