Strong Performance for Hounslow in Secondary School League Tables

Gumley House Convent School amongst the most improved schools in the country

Government figures published this week show more students than ever before are leaving Hounslow schools with good qualifications.

The figures from the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) show that, for the first time, more than sixty per cent (63.1% per cent) of Hounslow secondary school students achieved at least 5 of more A*-C GCSEs - 10 per cent higher than 2 years ago.

More than half of students (50.9 per cent) achieved five A*-C GCSE passes that included English and maths, a rise of more than 10 per cent over the last 4 years.

Local schools have beaten the national average in all the key measures used to assess performance, including:

  • 63.1 per cent of students achieved five or more GCSE’s or equivalent grades A*-C, compared to 59.2 per cent nationally;
  • 50.9 per cent of students achieved five or more GCSE’s or equivalent grades A*-C including Maths and English, compared to 45.8 per cent nationally;
  • the average points score per pupil was 381.6, compared to 365.0 nationally, meaning that Hounslow students achieve approximately 3 grades more than the national average;
  • Gumley House RC Convent School and The Heathland School were among the 100 most improved schools in the country for the number of students who receive 5 of more GCSE’s A*-C including English and maths; and
  • overall attendance at Hounslow schools has risen to 92.9 per cent, compared to 91.9 per cent nationally.

Cllr Robert Kinghorn, Executive Member for Education and Children, said “We are immensely proud of the achievements our schools are making, and these tables help show the excellent progress made in recent years.  These results show that the number of young people leaving school with good qualifications in the borough is the highest ever.

"We know that we must keep working hard to build on these results, and we must continually challenge ourselves to do more to make sure we give every young person in the borough the chance to succeed in life that a good education provides."
