Hammersmith Flyover Works Close to Finish

Road to be closed westbound all this weekend

Refurbishment of the Hammersmith Flyover is coming to an end after nearly two years of round-the-clock repair work.

Hammersmith - The Hammersmith Flyover (A4) will be closed westbound from 22:30 on Friday 7th until 05:00 on Monday 10th August.

This is to allow for final strengthening work to be completed, as part of the Road Modernisation Plan. Delays are expected on the A4 and drivers are advised to use the A40. Buses may be diverted or stop short of their destination.

During the closure, traffic will be diverted beneath the flyover or onto the A40 Western Avenue, with the diversion route clearly signed.

Since October 2013, Transport for London has been working to strengthen 11 of the flyover's 16 spans after the first five were repaired in 2012.

TfL says just one final piece of major work remains, replacing two five-tonne expansion joints, before the mammoth repair is completed.

"This is great news for residents and other road users that after a long wait, these essential repairs are near completion," says Cllr Wesley Harcourt, H&F Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and Residents’ Services.

" This overhaul has been a massive and costly undertaking and we sympathise with anyone whose journeys have been disrupted. This is the main east-to-west traffic artery through the borough, but the repairs were unavoidable if we want to keep traffic flowing for years to come."

The repair work has formed part of TfL's wider £4bn Road Modernisation Plan and has largely been carried out overnight to reduce disruption to road users and residents.

Previous work has involved the replacement of 34 bearings, resurfacing and waterproofing of the road and installation of a new concrete central reservation.

A total of 6.5km of tensioning cables have also been threaded through the structure. The expansion joints, next to be replaced, allow the flyover to flex as the weight of traffic moves across it.

There is a warning that buses may be delayed, diverted, or stop short of their final destination.
