Do You Have Hammersmith's Greenest Garden?

Summer competition launched to celebrate 'all things wild and flowering' in H&F

Do you have the greenest garden or best blooming balcony in Hammersmith?

H&F Council has launched a competition to find the best green spaces across the borough, and in particular those that not only look good, but which benefit the wider environment in some way.

That might include re-using materials to make planters, avoiding chemical pesticides, using less water, or helping increase biodiversity.

This year there is also a search for the best tree base or stump planned and maintained by neighours, and best wildlife garden.

"We know most residents take great pride in their gardens and neighbourhoods and support our ambition to make H&F the greenest borough in Britain," says Cllr Wesley Harcourt, Cabinet Member for Environment.

"So, we’ve set up this competition to find the best of what our green-fingered residents have achieved and to celebrate all things wild and flowering in H&F."

There are eight categories in the competition, as below:

  • Best front garden or front space – the area immediately in front of your home, however small. This could include a paved area or steps and ledges with pots
  • Best balcony – a balcony, large or small, including ground-floor verandas
  • Best street tree base or tree stump – a street tree base or stump that has been planted and maintained by you and your neighbours.
  • Best pub garden – a pub garden, accessible to the public
  • Best communal garden – a shared garden on a housing estate or in any other communal space that has been maintained by residents
  • Best sheltered housing garden – a shared garden in a sheltered housing development that has been maintained by residents
  • Best children’s garden – a garden area in a school, nursery or other public space that has been maintained by children
  • Best wildlife garden – a garden area that focuses on attracting and protecting wildlife, such as insects, birds, hedgehogs or pond life.
