Local schools perform well in league tables
Local schools are celebrating a bumper crop of GCSE results. Official achievement and attainment tables for GCSEs and A levels for schools in the borough have been released.
The number of students achieving five or more grades at A*-C including maths and English in the borough is 56 per cent, compared to a national figure of 47 per cent and in comparison with an average of 42 per cent across all inner London boroughs.
London Oratory once again performed exceptionally well with a GCSE point score of 528.5 which was exceeded in the borough only by St. Paul's Girls School and ahead of independent schools Latymer and Godolphin & Latymer on 512.4 and 419.6 respectively. Lady Margaret School achieved a score of 447.0 with 93% of girls getting 5 or more GCSEs at A* to C grades.
Fulham Cross, Hurlingham and Chelsea, Henry Compton and Sacred Heart have all seen better results over the past four years.
In 2003, Fulham Cross only had 23 per cent of its pupils achieve five 'good' GCSEs (Grade A*-C). In 2007, 45 per cent of pupils achieved this target. Henry Compton has increased the percentage of pupils obtaining 'good' GCSE results from 20 per cent in 2004 to 40 per cent in 2007.
Even beleaguered Hurlingham and Chelsea, which has been threatened with closure in the past year has seen the percentage of pupils gaining five or more A*-C grade GCSEs from 12 per cent in 2004 to 41 per cent in 2007.
The Contextually Value Added (CVA) scores, which are said to provide a more meaningful measure of the difference schools make, are a measure of progress made by pupils between joining the school and GCSEs. On the basis of this measure pupils at Hurlingham and Chelsea and Fulham Cross have in general exceeded expectations of their academic achievement, based on tests when they entered the school, although Henry Compton pupils have not scored well.

GCSE results
Pupils usually take GCSEs at the end of Key Stage 4, at ages 15-16. The new national measure for pupils sitting GCSEs is the percentage gaining at least 5 grades between A* and C, two of which must be English and mathematics. The results for Hammersmith & Fulham are exceptionally high - well above the Inner London and national averages.
