Tough call for Sony Ericsson

Mobile phone giant could shed staff in Hammersmith HQ

Sony Ericsson has announced it will axe 2,000 jobs worldwide - a quarter of its workforce - after losses of £316 in the first three months of 2009.

The company employs around 100 people at its headquarters in Hammersmith Road.

President Dick Komiyama said: "The first quarter of this year has been extremely challenging for Sony

Ericsson due to continued weak global demand.

"We are aligning our business to the new market reality with the aim of bringing the company back to

profitability as quickly as possible."

Sony Ericsson saw first-quarter sales slump by more than a third compared with last year.

The group shipped 14.5 million phones in the first three months of 2009, 35per cent below 12 months earlier.

Overall revenues were down 36 per cent at £1.54 billion and margins were hit by factors such as a stronger euro and a shift towards cheaper phones.

The company also lost market share in the first quarter, down 2 per cent to 6 per cent compared with the final three months of 2008 .
